Sestao River and Espanyol produced a remarkable cup tie that ended 4-3 after extra time, with the home side somehow finding a way past an opponent that dominated possession and created the better chances. The match was a story of contrasting styles: Espanyol controlled the ball for 61 percent of the contest and generated 3.38 expected goals, yet Sestao River's clinical finishing and resilience kept them alive before a goal in the 120+1st minute settled the tie.
The goals arrived in a strange sequence. The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute, and Sestao River doubled their advantage on 40 minutes, going into the interval with a two-goal cushion that few inside the ground could quite believe given Espanyol's control. The visitors responded after the break, and the closing minutes of normal time produced pure drama: a penalty was awarded on 90 minutes, and Espanyol converted to level the score. Extra time brought two more goals, one in the 96th minute and another in the 98th, before Sestao River struck the decisive blow in the 120+1st minute to complete a 4-3 victory.
Discipline was a major theme. Espanyol collected four yellow cards, with bookings on 8, 17, 30 and 89 minutes, while Sestao River picked up two yellows, on 78 and 110 minutes. No red cards were shown, and the penalty on 90 minutes was the only spot kick converted in normal time, though a penalty was also awarded as early as the 6th minute. The 89th-minute booking and the penalty that followed moments later were the turning point of regulation time, dragging Espanyol back into a game that had seemed to be slipping away.
The statistics underline how unusual the result was. Espanyol had 12 corners to Sestao River's seven, 13 shots inside the penalty area and four big chances created, while Sestao River managed nine shots on target from a 39 percent share of possession. Sestao River's goalkeeper made two saves, but Espanyol's keeper was far busier with five. For anyone following the Sestao River vs Espanyol preview, the numbers suggested an away win; instead, the home side's efficiency in front of goal and their willingness to defend - 51 clearances and 20 successful tackles - proved decisive. The result will carry real weight in the league standings and could prove crucial points in the club's season.
