Marikina Verdiamonds defeated Bulacan Kuyas 84-77 in the MPBL at Marikina Sports Center on Tuesday, closing the game on a decisive run after trailing by four entering the fourth quarter. The win strengthens Marikina's position in the playoff race while Bulacan's late-game execution problems continued.
Match Summary
Marikina controlled the opening quarter through disciplined half-court offense, building a 24-18 lead behind efficient interior scoring and second-chance points. Bulacan responded in the second period by pushing the tempo and attacking the offensive glass, cutting the deficit to 42-40 at halftime.
The third quarter belonged to Bulacan. Their guards exploited Marikina's switching scheme with dribble penetration, drawing help defenders and kicking out to open shooters. A 10-2 run midway through the period gave Bulacan a 61-57 advantage heading into the final frame.
Marikina reclaimed control in the fourth by tightening their pick-and-roll coverage and forcing three turnovers in the first four minutes. A 12-0 run turned a four-point deficit into an eight-point lead, and Bulacan never recovered.
Tactical Breakdown
Marikina operated primarily from a 4-out-1-in set, using their center as a screener at the elbow to create driving lanes for their wings. Bulacan countered with a 2-3 zone in the second quarter, which briefly disrupted Marikina's rhythm but left the corners open. Marikina shot 4-of-9 from the corners in the first half.
Bulacan's offense ran through high ball screens, with their point guard probing the middle before kicking to shooters. This worked well in the third quarter when Marikina's big men dropped too deep in coverage. Marikina adjusted in the fourth, switching all screens and forcing Bulacan's guards to shoot over length. Bulacan shot 3-of-11 in the final period.
The rebounding battle was nearly even (38-36 Marikina), but Marikina grabbed 11 offensive boards, leading to 14 second-chance points. Bulacan managed only six offensive rebounds and scored four second-chance points.
Decisive Moments
With 6:42 remaining and Bulacan leading 68-64, Marikina's point guard stripped the ball from Bulacan's shooting guard at the top of the key and converted a fast-break layup. On the next possession, Marikina's forward blocked a corner three attempt, leading to a transition dunk. Those two plays sparked the 12-0 run.
Bulacan had chances to stop the bleeding but missed four free throws in the fourth quarter, including the front end of a one-and-one with 3:10 left and the score at 78-73. Marikina sealed the game at the line, hitting 6-of-6 in the final minute.
Tournament Outlook
Marikina improves to 12-6 and moves into solo fourth place in the standings. Their remaining schedule includes three games against teams below .500, a favorable path to a top-four seed and a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Bulacan falls to 9-9 and sits in eighth place, clinging to the final playoff spot. Their next three opponents all rank in the top six, making their margin for error minimal. The loss exposed recurring late-game issues: poor free-throw shooting and stagnant half-court offense when their primary ball handler is pressured.
